Reasons A Motorcycle Battery Drains While Riding
There
was a time when motorcycles did not need batteries to start, but nowadays a
motorcycle is unable to function if the battery does not provide enough power. Motorcycle batteries
power the starter, the lighting system, and all electrical systems and
accessories. Since they are the heart of the vehicle, every bike owner needs to
know about motorcycle
batteries and how to maintain them.
Two-wheeler
batteries are generally of two types –
1. Wet cell battery - This battery contains a liquid
electrolyte like sulphuric acid. It can be used to power motorbikes for prolongedperiods.
Wet cell batteriesare commonly used by three-wheeler vehicles. However, this
battery has a little risk of leakage.
2. Dry cell battery – Although dry cell batteriesare
mostly used in mobile phones, laptops, flashlights, etc.they are also used as a
battery for two-wheelers.
Dry cell batteries are more durable and expensive than wet cell batteries. One dry battery needs 1.5
times more recharge than a wet battery.
Motorcycle batteries along with the alternator are the main components of a
motorcycle’s electric systems. The alternator generates electricity when the
engine of the bike is switched on and the battery acts as a buffer between the
electrical systems and alternators, protecting the wiring from high voltages
given off by the alternator. The regulator rectifier works with the alternator to convert Alternating
Current (AC) to Direct Current (DC) so that the battery of the two-wheeler gets
charged. If the regulator
rectifier does not work well, the battery starts to slowly drain. In
such a case, instead of the battery getting recharged during a ride, itgets drained.
A
faulty alternator can also drain the battery. When the alternator is unable to
supply extra power to the bike while running, the battery alone powers the ride
and eventually burns itself out. Electrical problems can occur due to a faulty connection, the
main fuse being blown, or when a battery is weak. Weak and defective batteries
discharge faster and get worn out in lesser than three years, impacting the
overall performance of the bike. Therefore, motorcycle owners are advised to
perform routine maintenance and ensure that all parts are working well.
Sometimes,
motorcycle owners neglect their bikes for a long time and, due to disuse, the
battery develops corrosion and starts draining power. This is a fatal sign, and all
motorcycle owners should be able to identify and rectify it with timely
treatment to the battery. However, if the battery is beyond repair, it must be
replaced immediately. These days buying battery for two-wheelers online is an easy task as
a lot of automotive battery manufacturers have started selling motorcycle batteries
online. Scooter and bike
battery prices in India range between Rs. 600 to 2200.
While
buying batteries for
two-wheeler over the Internet, one should be careful to buy good
quality, fully charged batteries from a known supplier. Often bike owners
search for low scooter and
bike battery prices online and end up with a battery that does more harm
than good to the performance of their motorbike. Since the life of the
motorcycle is so dependent on its batteries, bike owners should make a prudent
decision before buying. They should also look at the capacity of the battery
that is most suitable for their usage.
Battery
issues in a motorcycle can sometimes occur due to weather conditions. Leaving
the motorcycle uncovered during winters can cause harm to the battery. It is
advisable to keep the motorcycle well-oiled and covered in a garage when not in
use. This protects the electrical systems from damage during winters and helps
riders go for smooth rides without draining the battery. When it comes to
buying batteries, Tata Green is a great option as they are one of the leading
automotive battery manufacturers in India, and they sell battery for two-wheelers at
a reasonable range.
